We set August ablaze today with the return of the 2l Bangers, the Ministox and our first bit of Outlaw Hot Rod racing since the Festival. Congratulations to Ross Ayling who managed to hold on for the Festival Final and this year's Chick Woodroffe Memorial trophy in the Outlaw Hot Rods, holding out against Gary Stow who came in as the winner of the support race that day. In fact it was pretty tight between the front pair, just as with the points where Ross has only a nine point advantage on Gary, certainly not enough to be called a safe lead as one mistake could turn this on its head. Mistakes do happen, as do failures and so forth which keeps this formula interesting as the cars and the drivers have to go to the very limit in any race. The Bangers have been quite interesting of late, partly because you can never be too sure who will turn up. Goodness knows, we have seen a few drivers popping back from wherever they have got to in the last few months, and that means that the old rivalries return with them. Not that we need rely on such folk when it appears that a few new rivalries have blown up amongst the drivers that are regulars here, though it's to be hoped that the Loons can keep their cars together a little longer than in our last! Ah, but that's bangers for you – you go out on the circuit with no real idea about what you will be coming back with come the finish. Talking about hairy racing, that's been the story of our Ministox in the last few meetings with a number of drivers suffering penalties from the steward while unexpected wins crop up for drivers where the higher grades tough it out downfield. That's how Reid Murray carried off the first winner's trophy of the day in our last Ministox meeting with Ray Petty running out of laps in his attempt to catch up, Billy Kenneally behind him. It was a similar story in the second with Tommy Langley finishing ahead of Ray with Steve Hackett promoted to third after Joe Coultish and Billy Hull picked up a two place drop each for their actions. Whilst Billy Hull came back in the final and made up for this in spades by winning the thing, Reid in second and Danny Mitchell in third, Joe picked his second penalty of the day, dropping him out of the trophies again. Could there be a lesson in all this? Meanwhile, if you are between 2 and 11 years old, or if you are a parent of someone like that, and you have a go-kart of some description, have you considered taking part in this year's Pedal Banger Grand Prix? It takes place during the August Bank Holiday Monday meeting, and applications can be found at Race Control, ground level. Just see the starter, the mighty conquering Sharon, between races.
