We have two special events for our banger folk today with the Essex Championship and, as an extra treat, we have a whole load of caravans that need our tender loving care. We also have a similar title for the Lightning Rods while the SuperBangers are back today along with the Ministox. And, hopefully, no rain.
It was probably one of the most notable things about our last meeting where the National Bangers turned up to race for one of the two wild card places (the other place comes up in our September 9 meeting) was the torrential rain! Hopefully, we won't have to deal with that today, but we will certainly have to deal with the Bangers doing the Essex Championship, and just for giggles we also have a caravan race at the end. Now I know this isn't on the fixture list, but it's always good for a laugh. For those that haven't seen it before, caravan racing is slightly different to normal banger racing. You need a caravan on the back of your car at all times. Or at least part of it. Lose the caravan and you get a black flag waved at you. I'll say no more about what happens next as I don't want to spoil the surprise!
One thing about this season is that running our meetings every fortnight has shifted some of our dates around. That includes the Lightning Rods championship meetings; last year's Essex Championship didn't happen until October, so Mark Mackenzie doesn't get to hold the title for a complete year. It's unfortunate, I suppose, but all he needs to do is to bring his car out and win. Will he? Could he? Hey, if I could forecast the results, I'd be pretty rich by now (and probably bored out of my skull!) The cars to look for as far as our regulars go would have to be Roger Dormer, who has been a contender all season in the points, Anthony Lawrence, who has been pulling in some good wins on occasion, Lee Morrow, a controversial racer who has pulled in his fair share of titles over the years and Gary Greenland, the 2011 World Champion of the formula who has been very competitive of late. That doesn't mean that these are all we have to offer and one of the main attractions of this formula is that getting Sierras around this circuit isn't easy. You never know what is going to happen!
The Festival was our last SuperBanger meeting where the second day played right into Brian Jarvis' hands. While the weather was dry, the racing was certainly open but with the rain hitting late in the meeting, Brian's dominance in the wet meant that none could touch him. What will happen today? Will we stay dry and see some competition for the Chick Woodroffe Memorial winner? One thing that I should mention here is that there appears to be some confusion about the contact in this formula – believe it or not, I've heard people complaining about when a car gets spun out or knocked to the centre! Yes, the word “Banger” in the formula title is there for a reason as this is a limited contact
formula and always has been. Hope that clears things up!
Visiting Ministox driver Lauren Overy missed out on a complete whitewash of our last meeting with Dan Newman winning the final at the end of July in the Ministox. For more about that, read Matt's bit later in the programme.
As for what's coming up, we have drift practice here next Thursday (contact the PRI Office for bookings) while next Sunday sees the last meeting of the year here for Autospeed as the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars return for their Benevolent Fund Championship. There's also more from the Ministox as well as Rookie (sort of) Bangers. The meeting kicks off at 1pm. As for us, we're back on the Sunday, August 26 for a two day August Bank Holiday special which includes Essex Championship titles for the 1300cc Stock Cars and the SuperBangers, the Group A/Stock Rod Millennium Shield and, of course, the Rawlins Transport Big Van Championship. There's also small vans, rookies, Ministox and Lightning Rods. We start at 1pm as usual. It'll be a blast!
